Dr Tjeerd Tijhof is an experienced Adolescent and General Adult Psychiatrist, treating patients aged between 13 and 60 years. He received his medical and psychiatric training in The Netherlands.
In 2008, he relocated to Australia after working as a psychiatrist in The Netherlands for several years. He has worked across a diverse range of public health settings for over 20 years.
He specialises in working with young people and their families who have experienced trauma or have symptoms of depression, anxiety, psychosis, or neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD/ASD). He also works with adults with a range of mental illnesses, including anxiety and depressive disorders, trauma-related disorders, psychotic disorders, and ADHD.
Tjeerd adopts a patient-centred, holistic, and evidence-based approach. He recognises that each individual is unique and endeavours to personalise the treatment plan to cater to their specific needs and goals. Moreover, he understands that an individual is an integral part of a family system, and thus incorporates a developmental approach that considers the system as a whole.
His relaxed interpersonal style provides a feeling of safety and containment, His practice is strongly influenced by his training in Mentalise-Based Therapy and Family Therapy In his spare time, he enjoys exploring remote areas with his partner and two dogs in his Defender.
